San Francisco: Wir durften am Sonntag, 9. August 2026, Gast bei einem besonderen Anlass sein. Der San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club, einer der traditionsreichsten Clubs im Herzen von San Francisco, feierte sein 74 jähriges Bestehen, verbunden mit der feierlichen Amtseinführung seiner Officers, also der Amtsträger für das Jahr 2026/2027. Die Feier fand im DoubleTree Hotel in South San Francisco statt. Eingeladen hatte uns der Distrikt 4 C4, vertreten durch District Secretary Lion Mary Koo, die unseren Besuch mit großer Herzlichkeit vorbereitet hat.
Der Abend war weit mehr als eine Clubfeier. Zahlreiche LIONS Clubs aus der gesamten Bay Area waren zu Gast, dazu das Distriktkabinett und District Governor Jimmy Ness. Als einzige Gäste aus Europa wurden wir außerordentlich herzlich empfangen, mit einer Offenheit und Wärme, die uns sehr berührt hat. Besonders freundlich aufgenommen wurden wir an unserem Tisch von Past District Governor Michael Chan, der uns durch den Abend begleitet, vieles erklärt und uns mit zahlreichen Lions bekannt gemacht hat.
Inhaltlich standen drei Leitgedanken im Mittelpunkt, die auch uns in Bad Saulgau beschäftigen: Vision, Unity und Nachhaltigkeit. Der Zusammenhalt über Clubgrenzen, Generationen und Kulturen hinweg wurde an diesem Abend spürbar gelebt. Und der Gedanke, dass gemeinnütziges Engagement vorausschauend gedacht und dauerhaft angelegt sein muss, zog sich als roter Faden durch die Ansprachen.
Beeindruckend war für uns die Tiefe der Clubgeschichte. Der Club wurde am 7. Juni 1952 gechartert, und die Liste der Past Presidents reicht lückenlos von 1952 bis in die Gegenwart. Über sieben Jahrzehnte ehrenamtlichen Engagements, getragen von Generationen von Mitgliedern.
Die Amtseinführung selbst war von einer Tradition geprägt, die uns in Erinnerung bleiben wird. Jede Einführung wurde mit einem dreifachen Roar der gesamten Versammlung begleitet, dem kraftvollen Ruf der Lions, der Zustimmung, Freude und Verbundenheit zugleich ausdrückt. District Governor Jimmy Ness führte Mary Tsui als neue Präsidentin des San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club für das Amtsjahr 2026/2027 in ihr Amt ein und vollzog den traditionellen Austausch der Pins. Musikalisch wurde der Abend unter anderem von einer Violine begleitet, die der Feier einen besonders festlichen Rahmen gab.
Für uns als LIONS Club Bad Saulgau war dieser Abend ein Erlebnis. Unser Club wurde erst im Mai 2025 gegründet und zählt heute 33 Mitglieder. Ein Club von einem Jahr trifft auf einen Club von 74 Jahren, und doch verbindet uns dasselbe Motto: We Serve. Genau das macht das weltweite Netzwerk der Lions aus.
Als Gruß aus unserer Heimat überreichten wir ein Buch über den Bodensee und Oberschwaben sowie einen Bierkrug mit dem Dorausschreier, der traditionellen Fasnetsfigur von Bad Saulgau, deren Wurzeln bis in die Pestzeit zurückreichen. Er ruft die Menschen aus ihren Häusern und zurück ins Leben, ein Bild, das gut zu dem passt, was Lions überall auf der Welt tun.
Ausgeklungen ist der Festabend schließlich bei Karaoke. Nach allen Formalitäten wurde gemeinsam gesungen und gelacht, und spätestens hier zeigte sich, dass Freundschaft unter Lions keine Sprachgrenzen kennt.
Wir bedanken uns herzlich bei Präsidentin Mary Tsui, bei District Secretary Mary Koo und beim gesamten Distrikt 4 C4 für die außerordentlich freundliche Aufnahme. Vereinbart haben wir, in Kontakt zu bleiben. Wir freuen uns darauf, den Austausch zwischen Bad Saulgau und San Francisco weiter zu pflegen, denn genau darin liegt der Wert eines weltweiten Netzwerks.

Vision, Unity and Sustainability: Our Visit to the San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club
On Sunday, 9 August 2026, we had the privilege of attending a very special occasion. The San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club, one of the most established clubs in the heart of San Francisco, celebrated its 74th anniversary together with the formal Installation of Officers for 2026/2027. The celebration was held at the DoubleTree Hotel in South San Francisco. We were invited by District 4 C4, represented by District Secretary Lion Mary Koo, who prepared our visit with great warmth.
The evening was far more than a single club celebration. Numerous LIONS Clubs from across the Bay Area attended as guests, along with the District Cabinet and District Governor Jimmy Ness. As the only guests from Europe, we were received with extraordinary warmth and an openness that moved us deeply. At our table we were welcomed with particular kindness by Past District Governor Michael Chan, who accompanied us through the evening, explained many of the traditions to us and introduced us to numerous Lions.
Three guiding themes stood at the centre of the evening, all of which occupy us in Bad Saulgau as well: vision, unity and sustainability. The sense of togetherness across club borders, generations and cultures was tangible throughout. And the idea that voluntary service must be thought through with foresight and built to last ran like a common thread through the addresses.
What impressed us most was the depth of the club's history. Chartered on 7 June 1952, its list of Past Presidents runs unbroken from 1952 to the present day. More than seven decades of voluntary service, carried by generations of members.
The installation itself followed a tradition we will not forget. Each installation was accompanied by a threefold roar from the entire assembly, the powerful call of the Lions that expresses approval, joy and fellowship all at once. District Governor Jimmy Ness installed Mary Tsui as the new President of the San Francisco Chinatown Lions Club for 2026/2027 and performed the traditional Exchange of Pins. The evening was framed musically by several performances, including a violin that gave the celebration a particularly festive character.
For us as the LIONS Club Bad Saulgau, the evening was a memorable experience. Our club was founded only in May 2025 and today counts 33 members. A club of one year meeting a club of 74 years, and yet the same motto unites us: We Serve. This is exactly what the worldwide network of Lions is about.
As a greeting from our home, we presented a book about Lake Constance and Upper Swabia, together with a beer mug showing the Dorausschreier, the traditional carnival figure of Bad Saulgau, whose roots reach back to the time of the plague. He calls people out of their houses and back into life, an image that fits well with what Lions do all over the world.
The festive evening finally drew to a close with karaoke. Once all the formalities were done, everyone sang and laughed together, and it was here at the latest that it became clear: friendship among Lions knows no language barriers.
Our sincere thanks go to President Mary Tsui, to District Secretary Mary Koo and to the whole of District 4 C4 for their exceptionally kind welcome. We have agreed to stay in touch, and we look forward to nurturing the exchange between Bad Saulgau and San Francisco. This is precisely where the value of a worldwide network lies.
